Type Locality and Naming

The type section is in Wuligeztag Hill (41°26'N, 88°03'E), Xinjiang. The Wuligeztag Fm was named by Xinjiang Party of Regional Geological Survey (1981).

Synonym: (乌里格孜塔格组)


Lithology and Thickness

The formation is represented by dark gray thin-bedded to massive micritic to sparry bioclastic limestone, calcilutite and tuffaceous calcilutite. In the type area, the Wuligeztag Fm is 409 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the Xiangguletag Fm.

Upper contact

Regionally, the next younger unit is the Mishigou Fm of late-Early Silurian.

Fossils

This stratigraphic unit yields conodonts of Yaoxianognathus yaoxiangense assemblage (Zhong et al., 1990). Zhou Zhiyi et al. (1990) reported nautiloids Michelinoceras huangnigangense from the lower part.

Depositional setting

Zhong and Hao Yongxiang (1990) suggested that the Wuligeztag Fm represents carbonate sedimentation on a platform along the northern margin of Kuruktag sea basin on the east margin of Tarim basin. Zhou et al. (1990) proposed that the Wuligeztag Fm is a indication of environment change from slope to carbonate rise area.
